gastrointestinal symptoms in babies & children | Paediatric Dietitian

Helping you understand your child’s tummy troubles — and feel confident about what to do next

When your child regularly experiences tummy problems, it can be difficult to know what is causing them — or what you should change in their diet. You may have already tried different foods, supplements or advice you've found online, but still feel unsure about what is right for your child.

As a paediatric dietitian, I can help you understand your child's symptoms and explore whether nutrition and diet may be playing a role.

Does any of this sound familiar?

When your child is experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms, it can be difficult to know what is causing them or what you should do to help.

You may be wondering:

  • could their diet be contributing to their symptoms?

  • what foods should I give them — and which should I avoid?

  • are we avoiding foods unnecessarily?

  • is my child getting enough nutrients?

  • what should I do when their symptoms are making mealtimes difficult?

  • are the symptoms affecting my child’s appetite, sleep and energy levels?

You don't have to work it all out on your own. I can help.

Gastrointestinal symptoms - what are they?

Gastrointestinal symptoms affect the digestive system and can include reflux, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, tummy pain, bloating or wind.

FAQs

What age children do you work with?

1

I provide paediatric nutrition support for babies and children, from birth to 16 years old, with advice tailored to your child's age, development and individual needs.

Will my child need to stop eating certain foods?

2

Not necessarily. I aim to avoid unnecessary restrictions and will consider whether dietary changes are actually appropriate before recommending them. If a specific dietary change is recommended, I'll explain why and help you implement it safely and practically.

Do you diagnose gastrointestinal conditions?

3

A dietitian can assess dietary and nutritional factors and provide specialist dietary advice, but diagnosis of an underlying medical condition may require assessment by your GP or paediatrician. If your child's symptoms suggest that further medical assessment is needed, I'll discuss this with you and recommend appropriate next steps.

Can you help if my child is a fussy eater as well?

4

Yes. Gastrointestinal symptoms and feeding difficulties can sometimes occur alongside one another. If your child's symptoms are affecting what they are willing or able to eat, we can consider both their nutritional intake and their relationship with food.

Will you work alongside our GP or other healthcare professionals?

5

Where appropriate, I can work alongside your child's existing healthcare team. With your consent, relevant information can be shared to help provide joined-up care.
